Sarah Chapman is a viola player and interior designer based in London and Cornwall.

Welcome to my blog about all things interiors, but also a little bit about travel and playing the viola too! I trained at the Royal Academy of Music and then went on to do a post graduate diploma at the Royal College of Music. My background is definitely as a musician. I absolutely love this part of my life, and it’s provided an enormous amount of inspiration for my interior designing. You could say my style is as ecclectic as the music I play. I have a diploma in Interior Design from the National Design Academy, setting me off on this journey in interiors.

A monocrome Brixton kitchen project. I liked the layout of the existing kitchen and so for ease kept the position of the cooker and hob, sink and fridge. That golden triangle. I like the monocrome look, but with contrasting textures of gloss white wall cabinets, and wood effect black below. I’ve introduced some colour on a pin board out of view, gig passes, travel inspiration and general paraphernalia!

Very happy playing that viola.

The Asylum Peckham… venue inspiration. The chapel is a grade 2 listed building built in 1826 by the Licensed Victualers Benevolent Institution for use by the residents of Caroline Gardens. Bombed in WWII, the present use of the chapel is as a flexible space and I’ve played there a few times at weddings with @estilostring4. This venue is magical, the stained glass windows let in an atmospheric amount of light, and the exposed walls are rustic and just beautiful.

Saving the sea interior design style. This was for a project about current trends. This is definitely an update from the kitsch 00’s shell phase (Not that kitsch isn’t great in the right setting) The shells ‘top right’ are actually wall lights…how cool. Of course I got some Beasties wallpaper in there, very predictable.

Touring with Lana Del Rey, one of the highlights of my career. This is my favourite way to work, playing with a string quartet and being intergral to the show. The songs we played on this tour are very cinematic and so strings really enhance the production. Lana is also a dream to work this. Photo credit Alex Barnes

An alternative Dubai. I played at the Dubai Opera House in 2019 with the Bootleg Beatles. I don’t know how we managed it but the two days we were were there it was cloudy the whole time. The smallest amount of rain caused travel chaos and cancelleation of a desert trip. It wasn’t beach club weather!

A client’s living room redesign. The brief was pink! I worked in some contrasting pink tones, and some greens to bring the outside in.

Let’s Stay Home

Bedroom inspiration. This quirky bedroom combines comfort and a unique style, plus the cutest dog. I want!

That Bears Den poster again in @estilostring4 lounge. We had THE best tour with them. Just a mini one but very special.

A Different Kind of Blues (niche muso reference!) Sausset-les-Pins, France 2017

Beata Herman’s new paint range in Elle Decor magazine.

Ahhhhhh working with Adele, she has such an amazing voice. I was so lucky to tour with her around the UK and Europe.

This was interesting!!

One day I will have Timorous Beasties wallpaper! I lived in Glasgow for a few years and this Scottish company has been a source of inspiration ever since. The truly unique designs can dramatically enhance an interior, adding texture and an interesting talking point. I’m collaberating with a client at the moment and will add some Timorous Beasties wallpaper to her flat, perhaps a feature wall or in the loo, a classic!

London living room renovation. What a difference a floor makes. Finished living room photos to come.

Ibiza, 2017

Brixton bathroom project. There may be a monochrome theme!

Bedroom presentation board for a clients new flat. There was a very specific brief for this room. Neutrals were very much the colour scheme to create a calming and relaxed space away from a lively toddler. We kept to budget with mainly high street pieces, and so were able to add a higher end rug from Timorous Beasties. Luckily the client’s favourite too.

Reminder that there was a summer last year… stripes in Vlissingen, Netherlands 2020

Why can’t I remember where or what this gig was?

Moody Whitstable, 2020

Amsterdam 2021. The perfect city for a mini break in the summer. Sitting out by the canal with a beer and people watching.

Evita @ Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre and Bears Den Europeon tour. Viola work memories

I didn’t work for Madness in Nashville, that was a holiday and Madness was in London, but those reds 🙂 Poor house plant still hanging on in there.

Working with Michael Buble. The most professional artist and a joy to work for.

Another kitchen updated. This kitchen was previously immaculate, having been there since the 70s, and so well looked after by the previous owners. The whole house was like this and it was quite a wrench for the current owners to tear everthing out and renovate. They even found an old photo of the couple behind the fireplace, such a good story. They wanted a classic but hardwearing kitchen, bringing up two young children in the house. We designed it with maximum storage in mind, but without making it feel crowded by cupboards.

My happy place, the bar at The Pig Hotel, Canterbury

The Marciano Art Foundation, LA. Ai Weiwei had his ‘Life Cycle’ exhibition here. It spoke to the fundamentals of birth, death and transformation, and was truly moving. There were other exhibits to view, and I was there for hours. Just a great experience. 2018

A natural themed living room. Very neutral, calm and confortable, and I want that chair! The brief was for a busy family who wanted a family space with inspiration from the Peak District. I introduced eco friendly bamboo flooring as an option. Bamboo is a durable, versatile and abundant material making it an ideal floor covering.

Griffith Park, LA 2018. I went on a solo trip to California to visit a friend in Oahi., and then drove down the PCH to Malibu and LA.
